 Spirit Racing team - Home

Though the objective of a race is quite simple (namely, to be the first rider to cross the line), a number of tactics can be employed to achieve this goal.

Usually a rider or group of riders will try to break from the peloton (main body) by attacking and riding away to reduce the number of riders competing for the win.

If the break doesn't succeed and the body of cyclists comes back together the winner will often be someone whose strength is explosively sprinting past the bunch to reach the line first.

Teamwork between riders (both pre-arranged and ad-hoc) is important in many aspects: to prevent a break from getting away, helping riders in a break get clear of the bunch, and sometimes in delivering a sprinter to the front of the field

Jim shows the way in Peterborough
by Andyb on Monday, September 22, 2008
Speedy veteran Spirit rider showed the rest of the race a clean pair of heels at the LVRC races at Peterborough over the weekend. He outsprinted his rivals to win the Over 50s category beating some very good riders in the process. Ex-Olympic speed skater John French, a very strong rider himself was left floundering in Jim's wake. Russ rode the over 40s event finishing in a creditable 8th place.

Jim Moffatt wins at the MK Bowl
by Andyb on Thursday, August 21, 2008
Jim Moffatt won up at the MK bowl on Tuesday night in the vets road race event. Both Jim and Russell softened up the opposition. Tim Carter from North Bucks RC attacked and Jim went after him. Russell looked at the bunch, they looked at him, shall we dance? Next thing Jim and Tim Carter where out of sight. Great win and good luck for the Nationals Saturday.

Greg Wins again in Midlands MTB
by Russ on Thursday, August 07, 2008
The men Master's race saw one of the biggest fields. Keen to do well here were Graham Warby, Luke Moseley and Rob Oakes to name but a few in this massive field. Warby was very soon the man on a mission: after a disappointing 5th at the Nationals he was keen to put that behind him and get back to winning ways. Moseley was policing Warby quite well, until a missed bottle saw him fade off the pace, leaving Warby to take the win, while Matthew Dennis moved in for the kill and speed past Moseley to take second and with it the Champs title, while Moseley slipped down to third. Darren Alexander pitched up in a hard fought 7th but did enough to secure the overall series. Graham Warby - R3 master's men winner It was good today, made up for the ride I did at the nationals, I was pleased with my 5th back then, I had a little dip in form but it's come back now and I feel really good. I wasn't going to come this morning as it's about 120 miles, so it's quite a long way but I'm pleased I did in the end. It was a great course, well apart from the one muddy bit, other than that it was fun. I was riding round with Luke (Moseley) for the first couple of laps but he missed a bottle so he blew a little towards the end.

Greg and Russell in the Bowl placings again
by Russ on Friday, August 01, 2008
Following Greg Warbys' excellent form lately he finished 2nd to Matt Higgins in the Elite race. In the supporting race Russell came Third and has now moved up to 2nd catagory, along with Greg and Jim Moffat. This means next week the 'coffin dodger' will have to extend himself for once back with the Elites!

GREG AND RUSSELL HAVE FUN ROUND THE BOWL
by Russ on Friday, July 25, 2008
The MK bowl circuit was reduced to a tiny twisting narrow 600mtr sprint lap last night. Greg did a great ride to come second to Elite Matt Higgins. In the 3rd cat race Russell got 5th after starting at the back and moving through the field. Russell will soon have to join Greg in the Elite race as points are racking up, one more race should do it sadly for Rus!
