 Spirit Racing team - Home

Though the objective of a race is quite simple (namely, to be the first rider to cross the line), a number of tactics can be employed to achieve this goal.

Usually a rider or group of riders will try to break from the peloton (main body) by attacking and riding away to reduce the number of riders competing for the win.

If the break doesn't succeed and the body of cyclists comes back together the winner will often be someone whose strength is explosively sprinting past the bunch to reach the line first.

Teamwork between riders (both pre-arranged and ad-hoc) is important in many aspects: to prevent a break from getting away, helping riders in a break get clear of the bunch, and sometimes in delivering a sprinter to the front of the field

Jim Gets National Title
by Andy Brown on Wednesday, October 14, 2009
Congratulations to Jim who won the Vets National Time Trial Title at the weekend. A great performance, the standard has been set!

Results from the bowl.
by Andy Brown on Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Last weeks bowl race was one of the toughest so far. On a long circuit that went out from the start the boys certainly got a good workout. In the 3/4 Ali, Simon and Rich rode well covering the breaks and generally being in the mix all the way round. With Simon and Rich grabbing 6th & 7th as they crossed the line. First points to Rich as well. Great stuff, keep them coming. I think the E/1/2 was more of an ordeal than a bike race from the sound of things. Greg, Chris, Ian and Russell worked varios parts of their bodies off in a race which started faster than ever before, got a bit faster in the middle and then finished really fast! Only two more rounds to go and i think we all need to ride the E/1/2 to burn off all the potatoe wedges and burgers consumed at Chris's BBQ.

Race results

Last thursday at the bowl turned out to be a damp event to say the least. Well done to new recruit Mark who rode well in the closing laps to get a great second place. Rich stevens rode strongly at the weekend on a fairly flat road race course to get a top 15 finish. Well done guys.

Ian Warby takes 2nd at the bowl.
by Andy Brown on Monday, July 20, 2009
Another strong ride from the boys at the bowl. With a depleted field the race was run as one field. With dodgy conditions and a bit of rain the liven it up Ali 'Renshaw' Brown headed up the lead out for the boys with Ian Warby just being pipped on the line into second. A great result and more excellent team work.

Oakley Village RR
by Andy Brown on Monday, July 20, 2009
Russell rode a lonely Oakley RR with no team mates for company last Weekend. On a fast flat course a small break managed to get away towards the end. As the race came to the line there was carnage at the front as the bunfight started. Russell crossing the line in the top 15 and managing to avoid the pile up. A good ride on a fast course with no team mates. Don't forget to get those entries in early boys.

Ali Brown gets his first win in Spirit colours
by Andy Brown on Monday, July 20, 2009
Ali Brown rode an excellent race at the bowl on 9th July getting away with a small break with just a few laps to go and then finishing it off by taking the win on the line. Well done Ali.

Nick Clark Memorial/Ginger Smallwood Memorial 21st June.
by Andy Brown on Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Well done to Ali B and Ian for turning up at race HQ before the sun had come up to try and get an entry on the line. Ali took a space in the 90 mile E12 race to avoid missing out on a ride and ended up riding a great race finishing in the leading bunch. In the 3/4 race Ian joined Andy Brown and Simon Parks. The boys put in a great team performance. Unfortunately an early break managed to get clear but the team were always at the sharp end of the chasing group. Going into the last lap all the guys worked hard to keep the pace up to prevent anymore breakaway attempts. In the closing couple of km's Andy and Simon worked well to string the bunch out and set Ian up for a sprint. Ian put in a huge sprint but was just edged out of the top ten on the line coming across in 11th place. Strong rides from everyone and a great team effort in the 3/4 race.

More results for the team at the bowl last thursday. Russell dug deep and produced a dogged performance to get 7th in the E12 despite not feeling on top form. The 3/4 race produced 3 top ten finishes with Ian taking 3rd, Ali Brown 5th and Andy Brown 10th.

Spirit Race Weeknd
by Andy Brown on Monday, June 15, 2009
The sun shone on our race weekend at the bowl, and helped produce some fast races. Simon Parks got a great 4th place in the vets race. And Jim also rode to a strong 4th place finish in the 2,3,4's. A big thank you to everyone who helped out on the day.

More results.
by Andy Brown on Monday, June 15, 2009
Some more strong results from the team over the last week. Dave got a good 6th place at the bowl on the 4th June after a tough race. A great ride from Jim at the Icknield road race on the 7th gave him third place after going away with the winning break. Well done to Chris Parks who moves up to second cat after another top 10 finish at the bowl last thursday.
