 Spirit Racing team - Home

Though the objective of a race is quite simple (namely, to be the first rider to cross the line), a number of tactics can be employed to achieve this goal.

Usually a rider or group of riders will try to break from the peloton (main body) by attacking and riding away to reduce the number of riders competing for the win.

If the break doesn't succeed and the body of cyclists comes back together the winner will often be someone whose strength is explosively sprinting past the bunch to reach the line first.

Teamwork between riders (both pre-arranged and ad-hoc) is important in many aspects: to prevent a break from getting away, helping riders in a break get clear of the bunch, and sometimes in delivering a sprinter to the front of the field

Nick Clark Memorial/Ginger Smallwood Memorial 21st June.
by Andy Brown on Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Well done to Ali B and Ian for turning up at race HQ before the sun had come up to try and get an entry on the line. Ali took a space in the 90 mile E12 race to avoid missing out on a ride and ended up riding a great race finishing in the leading bunch. In the 3/4 race Ian joined Andy Brown and Simon Parks. The boys put in a great team performance. Unfortunately an early break managed to get clear but the team were always at the sharp end of the chasing group. Going into the last lap all the guys worked hard to keep the pace up to prevent anymore breakaway attempts. In the closing couple of km's Andy and Simon worked well to string the bunch out and set Ian up for a sprint. Ian put in a huge sprint but was just edged out of the top ten on the line coming across in 11th place. Strong rides from everyone and a great team effort in the 3/4 race.

More results for the team at the bowl last thursday. Russell dug deep and produced a dogged performance to get 7th in the E12 despite not feeling on top form. The 3/4 race produced 3 top ten finishes with Ian taking 3rd, Ali Brown 5th and Andy Brown 10th.

The sun shone on our race weekend at the bowl, and helped produce some fast races. Simon Parks got a great 4th place in the vets race. And Jim also rode to a strong 4th place finish in the 2,3,4's. A big thank you to everyone who helped out on the day.

More results.

Some more strong results from the team over the last week. Dave got a good 6th place at the bowl on the 4th June after a tough race. A great ride from Jim at the Icknield road race on the 7th gave him third place after going away with the winning break. Well done to Chris Parks who moves up to second cat after another top 10 finish at the bowl last thursday.

The sun brought out a decent sized field at the bowl last week with another good turnout from Spirit. The hot weather had got everybody excited and a fierce pace was set early on. When it came to the line the pace had started to tell on some of the riders but Ali, Ian and Simon managed to muscle their way into the top 10 with 6th 7th and 8th.

Greg and Russell rode the bowl last week with both finishing strongly in the top 10. Russell battled through the onset of his man flu to finish 9th, while Greg just missed out on a podium with 4th place.Jim rode well to win the vets. Nic had a good ride with a 21:38 10 on a tough course with gale force winds. Giving him 4th overall out of a good field of 65 riders. Geoff rode the Etape Caledonia on Sunday. Despite having to repair numerous punctures as a result of some stroppy locals who put carpet tacks on the road Geoff put in a strong ride to finish the 81 mile course in 4:04 giving him an excellent 36th out of 3500 riders.

Spirit clean sweep getting closer.
by Andy Brown on Friday, May 08, 2009
After a strong ride last week at the bowl the Spirit boy's turned out in force to put in another fantastic performance at Milton Keynes on Thursday night. With quite a few of the team riding they were able to stay at the sharp end of the race, especially useful as it went out on the loop. As the final few laps got nearer the guys managed to keep the pace up. As it came to the line Chris 'Cavendish' Parks was just edged out and took second. Ian was also in the mix at the end to pick up a 3rd. Not long to go now before their won't be room on the podium for anyone who isn't wearing a Spirit kit. The results and performances are coming thick and fast from all the races we are represented in. Great riding and still relatively early in the season.

Race results 16th April MK bowl

Chris Parks got the first win of the season with a great lead out from Alastair Nash into the last corner. Dave Watts, Ali Brown and Ian Warby did an admirable job of softening up the peleton in, let's face it, what was miserable conditions. Ian also managed to grab 3rd in the sprint finish. Nice team work lads. If Ali Brown had not punctured on the last lap we would have had three riders in the top 5. Russell also rode well to get a top ten finish in the Elite race.

Another good result for Greg, 2nd at the bowl and another Prime win. We had the boy's out in force in the Spring Chicken. On a course which seemed to have a headwind regardless of where you were on it, and pot holes you could abseil into everyone found it tough. We did look the business though. Jim And Russ also had a tough race in the Roy Thame cup on the same course. Andy Barret and Nick Stagg both rode TT's. Again the conditions making it tough going. Nick rode strongly to get 5th place.

Greg got a good second at the MK Bowl and won the only prime , well done. The rest of us took a kicking in the Hemel RR events but good training. Bring on the sunshine!
