Though the objective of a race is quite simple (namely, to be the first rider to cross the line), a number of tactics can be employed to achieve this goal.
Usually a rider or group of riders will try to break from the peloton (main body) by attacking and riding away to reduce the number of riders competing for the win.
If the break doesn't succeed and the body of cyclists comes back together the winner will often be someone whose strength is explosively sprinting past the bunch to reach the line first.
Teamwork between riders (both pre-arranged and ad-hoc) is important in many aspects: to prevent a break from getting away, helping riders in a break get clear of the bunch, and sometimes in delivering a sprinter to the front of the field

| Andy Brown rode the 100 mile (and a bit) Chiltern Challenge on Sunday to get in some good training miles and raise a few quid for Action Medical Research. After seeing that it was due to be the hottest day of the year and that there was a football match on I decided to sign on very early. As did everyone else. After standing around for 30 mins we were off. The course started off with some challenging climbs, not that we needed warming up. After a couple of mechanicals, many water stops and a few melted energy bars later the end was in site. After a drive home and a long cold bath I had also managed to miss the footy, which was an added bonus. Overall a good day out! | ||

| Geoff rode strongly and quickly at the VTTA (EA) 25 on Saturday 19th and got under the hour with a time of 57:04. It was cold wet and very windy making the time even more impressive. He ended up in 20th place overall. No stealth bike for Geoff but a few positional changes seem to he helping the times tumble. | ||

| Geoff also rode the 50 on the 13th June and finished with a good time of 2:1:36. Not bad considering the time spent lying on the rode. No prizes unfortunately just a lot less skin on his undercarriage. | ||

| Jim was at it again on the stealth bike and rode a ‘50’ at the crack of dawn on the 13th June. Although the Legs were aching because of the 25 the day before he rode into it, and went on to post a time of 1.51.20 beating the only other 50 he has have ever done (2 weeks previous on the same course) by 5 minutes. Giving him 5th place and the vets standard prize. | ||

| Well done to Geoff who completed his C2C2C challenge last week. 265 miles and 7500m climbing later Geoff arrived back in Tynemouth after 2 days of what sounded like arctic northern conditions. Good training though, as Geoff then went on to put in a strong ride in the Spirit 10 on the Leighton Buzzard bypass on Sunday morning. | ||
